How about a free Filterheadz tune?

This is the first in the series of free downloads for all the good folks visiting this place. We plan to make a habit of giving away some nice goodies... so here we go!

Freebie #1 : A few months ago we did a sneaky bootleg of a rather famous track. Like a "Filterheadz vs ...." thing. A lot of the top jocks played this one but we never gave the track an official release... Now you get a chance to get your hands on it. Drop your email in the newsletter sign-up box on the right and we'll email you a link to this secret track :-)

Blue Sky Happiness!

Ld4artwork4_2My dearest friends, we have a new single out. We titled this tune "Blue Sky Happiness" because that's exactly the feeling we had in mind when produced this one.
Be our guest and have a listen to both mixes in the soundplayer on the left.

Some words from the press release :

Filterheadz are back with some ‘Blue Sky Happiness’. The Original Mix has been gathering plaudits across the board over the summer months (including a ‘Big Tune’ tip from Mixmag), and is now joined by the brand new Filterheadz’ No Clouds Mix for release on the boys own Love Distortion label.

‘Blue Sky Happiness’ is a pure feelgood tune. A delicious blend of exotic atmospherics and serious dancefloor attitude. It’s classic Filterheadz style for sure, doing what they do best, and creating another anthemic masterpiece with their second release for 2006.

You can get this lovely tune by clicking on the shop icons below :

Making the album! Part 1

As you could read in the "welcome" post, the original idea for this blog is to be a documentary about the making of our debut album. The reason we want to blog about the album is that we think it will keep us focused on the task at hand. Once we go public with the plan, we can't really go back. It puts a bit of pressure on and that's good. Just by typing these words I already feel extra motivated!

So how far are we right now? Basically, we have a title and about 50 half finished tracks.

The title : A good title is important, even if it's just a working title. You gotta give the little baby a name. No, we're not gonna tell you what the title is. Not yet, it's just a bit to soon for that! But it sure will draw attention.

The tracks : Ok, I didn't really count them and I'm sure we have more than 50. We spend a few days going through all the hard-drives and throwing away all the silly and "what were we thinking?"-ideas. Obviously we only want to present you the great stuff... Some ideas are almost finished, others are still in embryonic phase. The range of styles varies quite a bit. Everything from big room stompers to experimental electronica.

Finding the sound for a Filterheadz track is always a bit of an adventure. We have covered a lot of directions in the past : techno, house, progressive and everything in between. So far we have always combined elements from everywhere and sometimes we wonder if that was always such a good idea. Although those combinations gave us the classic Filterheadz sound, we feel that we have to push the boundaries this time. With this album we really want to take a leap forward sonically and go for a wilder and more cutting edge sound.

Curious? So are we. So join us on this journey and we'll discover it together...

Producers Corner : GURU! part 1

This is the first installment of the "producers corner". Here we will talk about all the gear we use and how we use it. We always get loads of questions about our studio setup. This will be the place where we tell it all..

For our first post we have chosen one of the coolest pieces of software out there : FXpansion's GURU.
GURU is a drum machine, an MPC style sampler, FX box, recycle type cut up tool and more...

One of the key features of GURU is "Smartslice" : Not only does it slice up your beats, it also magically figures out which slice is a kick, a snare, a hihat or percussion. This way it turns a beat into a drum kit that you can use with your own patterns.

We had been searching for a more intuitive and creative way to build beats. It was one of those moments were you think : if only someone would build a tool that could do this and that and also that and that... GURU turned out to be exactly what we were looking for.

Next week I'll post a video here of GURU is action, but for now go check out the interview we did with the good folks at FXpansion about the way we use GURU.
